Lorsque Simone Weil meurt d'épuisement, physique et moral, en Angleterre, à Ashford, le 24 août 1943, à l'âge de trente-quatre ans, son oeuvre publiée se réduit à quelques articles parus dans des revues le plus souvent politiques ou syndicales. Mais elle laisse une quantité de manuscrits divers qui seront pieusement recueillis par ses parents et par ses amis.Bien des inédits ont pu être découverts à la suite d'un examen systématique des "papiers" mis à la disposition des éditeurs : esquisses de textes abandonnés en cours de rédaction, cahiers et carnets non reproduits dans les éditions antérieures, notes préparatoires à des cours ou à des travaux plus élaborés. Inédite aussi, pour une large part, la correspondance familiale et générale que sera offerte au public. La recherche persévérante des articles de Simone Weil a permis de retrouver des textes fort peu ou mal connus, mais nullement négligeables.L'édition des oeuvres complètes de Simone Weil ainsi réunies formera seize volumes répartis en sept tomes.
