Although the book's copyright date is 1986, Bell could not be more accurate and timely in assessment of the conflict between teenagers and their parents. We only have to pick up a newspaper to read how frustrated teenagers focus their rage on teachers, parents, or classmates. Franklin Crabbe is a discontented eighteen-year-old who carefully plans his escape from the world his rich parents have created. Although Crabbe has money and brains, he is unhappy and totally unfulfilled. His only friend is Silent Sam, the vodka he drinks to soothe his dissatisfaction. Caught drinking at school, Crabbe feels he must leave home tonight, the night before final exams. Lost in the bush with no compass, Crabbe nearly drowns in a canoeing accident. Pulled to safety by a beautiful woman, Crabbe learns the ways of the woods, how to guide a canoe, set traps, and use a compass. He soon learns his new friend is also running away from something. This book is so descriptive, you can actually see the characters and the scenery. As a retired school teacher, I would strongly recommend this book to guidance counselors and teachers of adolescents. I intend to share my copy with my sister, a social worker for troubled teens. Every parent wishes they could get inside the head of their teenagers. William Bell seems to have done just that.
