Set in the years before the Bobby Pendragon series begins, this first book of the Travelers series explores the lives of Vo Spader, Gunny Van Dyke, and Kasha before they become Travelers and join Bobby Pendragon during the war. Each tale is set separately and explores the lives of the Travelers' before they understand their place in the universe. Kasha lives on Eelong and is caught between forging her own way in the world and listening to her father and what he believes to be right. Gunny Van Dyke is called upon to protect two young children after their father is killed and finds more strength in himself and those around him than he thought possible. Vo Spader, a recent graduate from the Acquaneer Academy, has to learn to control his temper and work alongside people he does not like or respect. Each story highlights the strengths of the individual Travelers and also serves to highlight their lives before they become Travelers. While the short stories are interesting in and of themselves, there is not enough back story provided to adequately introduce the characters or societies to new readers. The book will no doubt be of great interest to those familiar with the Pendragon stories but may provide little interest to readers who are not familiar with that series. Reviewer: Danielle Williams
