What is a writer to do for a sequel after killing off not only his protagonist, but every last one of the good guys? This is the challenge D.J. MacHale wrote himself into for the tenth and final book of his Pendragon series. Not that MacHale, like his journal-writing hero, Bobby Pendragon, ever finds himself at a loss for words. His nearly six-hundred-page solution is bolstered by interminable pep talks and philosophical digressions, all heavy on the issue of the moral right. In between, through the magic of the spirit world of Solara, Bobby and his entire team of friends and fellow Travelers are sort of reincarnated into their old bodily forms for one last mission: a final showdown with Saint Dane. Working against a stiff deadline, Bobby gets to revisit his favorite old worlds in search of the missing factor that might actually thwart the total destruction of his Halla universe. MacHale has managed to throw in enough battles and derring-do to keep the pages turning, not to mention an optional alternate ending about which the less said the better. Reviewer: Kathleen Karr
