This book grew out of the idiosyncratic flat plush Uglydolls first marketed by the authors in 2002. As some of the toys are limited edition releases, the Uglydolls appeal to kids both as toys and as collectibles. The characters are non-gendered, and each is distinct in appearance and personality. This book may meet a desire for friends of Uglydolls to be introduced to an imagined universe for the toys to inhabit. Aptly titled a "guide," this book describes such features of the Uglyverse as a cookie permit, the train station and doughnut house, firehouse and hospital. These places are populated by Uglydolls, with names such as Ice-Bat, Jeero, Tray, and Wedgehead. Plot and character development are absent. Generally, the Uglyverse is just sillysweets are healthy; police catch you, uh, help you; deskwork means being paid for doing nothing. The premise of the Uglyverse is that "ugly is the new beautiful." It is hard, however, to see how these weird, colorful little characters are either ugly or beautiful, and this book does little to explain the idea. Essentially, kids who like the looks of Uglydolls will probably like this small picture book fantasy. Those who don't will have no use for it. Reviewer: Margaret C. F. Pollock
