This book documents and illustrates the cytology of the cold-blooded vertebrates. It details the continuum of erythrocytes from the invertebrates through the members of the phylogenetic Classes that comprise the poikilotherms. The presentation initiates with a discussion of hemoglobin, the reason for the erythrocyte's existence. The form and activities of this molecule are considered when it is dissolved in some body fluis (in certain invertebrates) and when it is enclosed within free, fluid-suspended cells. The first-examined erythrocytes are the red cells that were originally expressed in evolution in a subset of representatives from six Phyla of invertebrates. These cells are explored in regard to their development, configuration, structure, and how these prototypes differ from those of the extant cold-blooded vertebrates. The text next addresses the array of cytologic variable associated with the erythrocyte as it conducts its conceptual phylogenetic odyssey through the ichthyan, amphibian and reptilian strata. Aspects that are given attention at each of these taxa are embryoniv/larval and definitive population of erythrocytes, bright field and ultrastructural cytology, loci of production, erythroplastids, sex-linked phenomena, environmental factors, osmotic fragility, cytochemistry and splenic sequestration. Erythrocyte counts, hemoglobin concentrations, hematocrits and erythrocellular indices are taxonomically tabulated, referenced as to source, and assessed as expressions of evolutionary proogression. The unique Antarctic fishes that are devoid of erythrocytes and hemoglobin, and the unusual marine fishes and salamandres which have solely or primarily denucleated erythrocytes respectively, are given special attention. The occurrence and morphologic identification of intraerythrocytic parasites (including viruses) and their impact upon the cytology of the red cells is discussed and illustrated.
