Product Description
This foundational resource is the first to explicitly detail the Child and Youth Care (CYC) core competencies for students preparing to take the Child and Youth Care-Professional (CYC-P) certification exam. Designed according to the Child and Youth Care Certification Board (CYCCB), this book offers a comprehensive review of the five domains of CYC practitioner competencies: professionalism, cultural and human diversity, applied human development, relationship and communication, and developmental practice methods. Pedagogical tools bring concepts to life through critical discussion and reflection. The text is packed with tables, chapter learning outcomes, reflection questions, end-of-chapter reference lists, glossary terms, definitions from the CYCCB, and real world case studies. A unique and practical textbook, this is an indispensable resource for introductory courses in child and youth care programs.
Review
"A Tapestry of Relational Child and Youth Care Competencies offers the Child and Youth Care profession a unique resource that is congruent with CYC theory and practice. The text meets both CYC students and instructors 'where they are at' and encourages them to bring their self to the work. The authors contribute years of practitioner experience but leave space for students and instructors to engage with the material through their own personal lens and context. This book will be a foundational text for transitioning theory into practice in CYC education."
-Heather Snell, Lecturer, Child and Youth Care Programs, University of Strathclyde, Ryerson University, member of Child and Youth Care Accreditation Board - Research & Education Committees, and editor of Relational Child and Youth Care Practice
"This text is full of useful teaching tools to enhance any CYC course. If learning about the CYC competencies, its milieus, and the children, youth, and families we work with is part of the learning outcomes for your course, this book is a good choice. The case studies and reflection questions are abundant and cross many CYC domains, providing teaching options for practicing the CYC theory. The authors' combined years of frontline experience provide excellent perspective to what we as CYC practitioners do."
