Logemann, Jeri A.
Geralyn M. SchulzThis is the second edition (first published in 1983) of an in-depth discussion of swallowing disorders occurring in the preparatory, oral, and pharyngeal stages of the swallow. It covers the evaluation and management of orophayrngeal swallowing disorders resulting from cancer and neurologic lesions. The purpose is to provide students the requisite knowledge base to make effective diagnostic and treatment decisions for patients presenting with oropharyngeal dysphagia. For the practicing clinician, the purpose of this book is to evaluate and treat the dysphagic patient within the context of total neuromotor control of the upper aerodigestive tract. This book is written for upper level undergraduate and graduate students as well as for the practicing clinician. The author is one of the founders and preeminent researchers, scholars, and clinicians in the field of swallowing disorders. The line drawings and the majority of the videofluoroscopic illustrations are very helpful in detailing the anatomic structures involved in the swallow and complement the text well. A few of the videofluoroscopic illustrations, however, are too dark to easily see the relevant anatomical structures. The references are invaluable both in terms of the number and depth of the literature reviewed. This second edition represents a significant update and a wealth of information both in terms of anatomical significance of structures involved in swallowing and in terms of pragmatic methods to assess, evaluate, and treat the patient with oropharyngeal dysphagia. As such, this book is relevant for any student or clinician practicing in a medical setting.
