Dust jacket notes: "The sea has been a source of pleasure and inspiration for centuries. Constantly changing the imagination of artists as diverse as Hokusai and Marin. Here, in this innovative "idea book", a sequel to the author's popular Creative Landscape Painting, Edward Betts offers more than 50 different approaches to painting the sea. Because the idea is to free the artist of preconceived notions of how the sea should be painted, the painting styles discussed range from photographic realism to various degrees of abstraction (formal, lyrical, expressive, semiabstraction, minimalism), and the paintings shown are composed in a variety of media (oil, acrylic, watercolor, mixed media)....After a brief introduction, Betts launches into a discussion of 50 imaginative ways to paint marine subjects, explaining how to experiment with viewpoints, lighting, textures, patterns, and styles to add new vitality to your work. Each idea is presented in three parts: the concept is thoroughly explained, suggestions are given on how to incorporate it into your own art, and an example of its application the painting of a leading contemporary artist is shown. The caption accompanying each example contains Betts' usual penetrating, perceptive analysis of the artist's primary intent and how it has been communicated in painting. A color gallery containing 32 additional paintings follows, adding yet another dimension to this seascape painting idea book. Finally, the book concludes with a section entitled "Studio Notes," which offers several pages of practical tips on painting the sea. Creative Seascape Painting will stimulate brand new ways of thinking. It is a book to be enjoyed by professional artists, intermediate and advanced students, and dedicated amateurs - in short, by all artists searching for fresh ways to extend and improve their art. 160 pages. 8.25 x 11 inches, 32 color pages, 50 black-and-white illustrations, suggested reading, Index."
