The demand for accurate sport nutrition information is greater than ever before and with the vast amount of misinformation available, keeping up with sport nutrition can be an overwhelming task. Sport Nutrition for Health and Performance is designed to sort fact from fiction and help students and practitioners obtain the knowledge they need to give sound nutritional advice to athletes and active individuals. As a reference, this text will keep practitioners on the cutting edge of exercise and nutritional science.

Written by two of the industry's leading authorities, Melinda M. Manore, PhD, RD, FACSM, and Janice L. Thompson, PhD, FACSM, this text combines the authors extensive backgrounds in nutrition, exercise physiology, and fitness to help bridge the gap between scientific literature and practical application. The book provides an in-depth overview of sport nutrition. In addition, the reader will learn about:

  • the metabolic role of carbohydrate, fat, and protein in fueling the body during physical activity,

  • energy balance, methods for achieving a healthy body weight, body composition measurements, and nutrition and fitness assessment,

  • the physiology of fluid and electrolyte balance,

  • vitamin and mineral concerns associated with sport and exercise,

  • nutrition and exercise issues specific to the active female,

  • evaluating ergogenic aids.

Sport Nutrition for Health and Performance is different from other texts and reference books on the subject because the authors add the why behind the what to do. Both students and practitioners will benefit from the clear and comprehensive presentation of the nutrition and exercise science explained in this book, as well as the practical application of this research as it applies to counseling athletes and active individuals. Reviewer:Amy Hess-Fischl, MS, RD, LDN, BC-ADM, CDE(University of Chicago Medical Center)
Description:This is a comprehensive review of nutrition as it relates to sports, for weekend warriors to elite athletes. The first edition was published in 2000.
Purpose:The book assumes readers have a basic understanding of nutrition, and exercise science, as well as physical and metabolic pathways. The purpose is to provide up-to-date information to healthcare professionals who work with athletes. This is a needed addition to the arsenal of references, since physical activity is an integral component of overall health for all individuals.
Audience:It is written for all healthcare professionals working with athletes, but it also would be an excellent addition to the curriculum for masters' students in dietetics, nursing, exercise physiology, and physical therapy. The three editors as well as the chapter authors are all respected individuals in sports nutrition.
Features:Basic concepts of nutrition in athletes, including carbohydrate, protein, and fat requirements, are covered. The update includes the macronutrient and micronutrient updates to reflect current research and recommendations. Each chapter begins with key points, preparing readers for the topics to be covered. Chapters also include chapter in review, highlights and key concepts. Key concepts cover key terms and additional practical information for use with clients or patients.
Assessment:This informative book provides excellent explanations, especially of the metabolism of carbohydrate, fat, and protein in exercise. It also devotes a chapter to weight loss interventions and weight concerns in athletes, and contains practical advice for use with individuals.
