May Bird has always been a bit...different. While most of her classmates were riding their bikes, she was running around the woods dressed as a warrior princess with her hairless cat at her side. And instead of spending summer vacation at birthday parties, May was discovering a mysterious lake hidden among the trees and stumbling into the land of ghosts, the Ever After.
A fearful and fantastic realm located among the stars, the Ever After is full of all manner of things that go bump in the night. And if May is to find her way out again, she must reach the mysterious Lady of North Farm, who lives in a cold, forbidding land that even the spooks find spooky.
With her courageous (yet melancholy) kitty and a ragtag group of spectral friends she's picked up along the way, May is determined to escape the Afterlife. But first she must face her very worst fears, and there's no telling who will make it through...or who will be left behind.

May is desperately trying to reach the Lady of North Farm. She may give May the help she needs to return to her home in Briery Swamp, West Virginia. But then again she may not. The Lady is known for her acts of great kindness and acts of similarly tremendous nastiness. May and her friends travel across the fantastical landscape of the Ever After: Paradise Falls, where dead risk takers continue to take risks; Petrified Pass, the Land of the Undead (Elvis is there, of course!); and finally to Hocus Pocus. All the while the group is hunted by the evil Bo Cleevil and his equally evil minions. Bo is intent on destroying May, just as he destroys thriving ghost towns and replaces them with Cleevilvilles filled with Crawl-Marts, Char-Bucks, and Skullbuster Video stores. Is May strong enough to overcome all the obstacles in her path and to reach the portal that will take her home? Will she choose to leave the land of the dead and her friends who need her to return to her mother in the here and now? Or will she stay? Read the first book of the series before beginning this one; it will be a much more enjoyable and interesting read if you know how May got to the Ever After, who her friends are (or were), what is said about her in the Book of the Dead, and why the Evil Bo Cleevil is out to get her. A delightful mix of horror and humor.
