With a stirring quote set within a stunning and incisive collage, Zalben sets the tone for each of the sixteen peacemakers she profiles in this book. Mahatma Gandhi, Eleanor Roosevelt, Cesar Chavez,Aung San Suu Kyi, and the most recent Nobel Prize winner, Dr.Wangari Maathai, are some of thepeople she chose to represent different eras and parts of the globe. Many started down their path to peace during childhood, and all challenge us to think about improving the lives of others. Also included in this beautiful volume are art notes, a glossary, a bibliography, further reading, and an index, making it an excellent resource for teachers and students.

Carlee Hallman - Children's Literature

This attractive book gives a short biography of sixteen peacemakers, many of whom received the Nobel Peace Prize. From such notables as Mother Teresa, Martin Luther King, Jr., and John Fitzgerald Kennedy to less well known figures such as Wangari Maathai and Aung San Suu Kyi, the reader learns of different ways people work for peace and justice. Each bio has a facing page with a collage and a quotation from the person. The Dalai Lama is quoted as saying, Inner peace is the true foundation of world peace. At the back of the book the artist explains the significance of the collage materials such as special paper, native fabrics, and postage stamps. There is a glossary, bibliography, lists for further study, and an index. The author states, One person can make a difference. Young people may be inspired to continue the work of these pioneers of peace. This is a good addition for any children's library. 2006, Dutton Children's Books/Penguin Young Readers Group, and Ages 8 to 13.
