Slather on the sunblock and welcome to The Nannies, where toddlers have stylists and a lost Sidekick can be the social kiss of death, cerulean blue swimming pools stretch to infinity and paparazzi camp out behind Starbucks, and a good nanny—like a celebrity without Botox—is hard to find.

Children's Literature

Kiley McCaan is the small-town girl who wants to live a life different from the one she's always known. In order to do that she has to prove to her mother that she can make it on her own. But she's just lost her first nanny job, and making it on your own in L.A. is no easy task. Lydia Chandler is the sexy dreamer who spent the better part of her young life living in the Amazon basin of South America. She's hungry for city life and wants love on her own terms, but life doesn't always work out the way Lydia wants it to. Esme Castaneda is the Latina nanny sleeping with her wealthy employer's eldest son. Torn between her boyfriend and her new lover, her two worlds are on an inevitable collision course. This is the story of three young girls. No, this is not an episode of Charlie's Angels. This is Melody Mayer's first foray into writing, and she offers a deliciously twisted insight into the daily workings of L.A.'s social elite. This assemblage of psychotic publicists, paranoid tennis pros, and gym-room orgies is surprisingly realistic. But the three girls in whom the reader is asked to invest so much time in prove to be cardboard cutouts that are not half as interesting as the world in which they live. Each of their individual background stories is stereotypical and, at times, forced—especially when it comes to Lydia, who the reader is meant to believe lived in a tribal society for the better part of a decade. Her background comes across as a last-minute attempt at character depth. The Spanish text is grammatically awkward, and as a native speaker I wonder if this is intentional or simply a lack of editor. Part of the "Nannies" series.
