As some of the toys are limited edition releases, the Uglydolls appeal to kids both as toys and as collectibles. The characters are non-gendered, and each is distinct in appearance and personality. This book may meet a desire for friends of Uglydolls to be introduced to an imagined universe for the toys to inhabit. Aptly titled a \"guide,\" this book describes such features of the Uglyverse as a cookie permit, the train station and doughnut house, firehouse and hospital. These places are populated by Uglydolls, with names such as Ice-Bat, Jeero, Tray, and Wedgehead. Plot and character development are absent. Generally, the Uglyverse is just silly—sweets are healthy; police catch you, uh, help you; deskwork means being paid for doing nothing. The premise of the Uglyverse is that \"ugly is the new beautiful.\" It is hard, however, to see how these weird, colorful little characters are either ugly or beautiful, and this book does little to explain the idea.
