In this book, Alice Munro tells us.

In her Foreword (an unusual feature in itself), she explains how she, born Alice Laidlaw in Ontario, in recent years became interested in the history of her Laidlaw ancestors. Starting in the wilds of the Scottish Borders, she learned a great deal about a famous ancestor, born around 1700, who, as his tombstone records, “for feats of frolic, agility and strength, had no equal in his day.” She traced the family’s history with the help of that man’s nephew, the famous writer James Hogg, finding to her delight that each generation of the family had produced a writer who wanted to record what had befallen them.

In this way, she was able to follow the family’s voyage to Canada in 1818, and their hard times as pioneers — once a father dies on the same day that a daughter is born in the same frontier cabin. “I put all this material together over the years,” Alice tells us, “and almost without my noticing what was happening, it began to shape itself, here and there, into something almost like stories. Some of the characters gave themselves to me in their own words, others rose out of their situations.”

As the book goes down through the generations, we come to Robert Laidlaw, Alice’s father, and then, at the book’s heart, the stories become first-person stories, set during her lifetime. So is this a memoir? No. She drew on personal experiences, “but then I did anything I wanted to with this material, because the chief thing I was doing was making a story.”

The resulting collection of stories range from the title story — where through a haze of whiskey Alice’s ancestors gaze north from Edinburgh Castle at the Fife coast, believing that it is North America — all the way to the final story, where we travel with “Alice Munro” today. In the author’s words, these stories “pay more attention to the truth of a life than fiction usually does. Depicting Irish middle class life in and around Dublin in the early 20th century, these stories begin with pieces narrated by children, and as the stories continue they deal with the lives and concerns of progressively older people. The stories center on Joyce's idea of an epiphany: a moment where a character has a special moment of self-understanding or illumination. Because it was written amidst harsh Irish nationalism and the search for a national identity, Dubliners depicts an historic crossroads, offering an intimate look at the convergence of various ideas and influences in Ireland. The book is also key to understanding Joyce’s writing, as many of the characters in Dubliners later appear in Joyce's epic novel Ulysses.

Bookpage

Even better than reading Joyce is having Joyce read to you, and the readers here are superb...

Categories:

Politics & Social Sciences

Politics & Government

Specific Topics

Censorship

The #1 New York Times Bestseller

GoodReads Choice Award semi finalist, Amazon Best Mysteries & Thrillers of 2017 selection

The final installment in the epic Natchez Burning trilogy by Greg Iles

“Natchez Burning is extraordinarily entertaining and fiendishly suspenseful. The woman he loves is gone, his principles have been irrevocably compromised, and his father, once a paragon of the community that Penn leads as mayor, is about to be tried for the murder of a former lover. Most terrifying of all, Dr. Cage seems bent on self-destruction. Despite Penn's experience as a prosecutor in major murder trials, his father has frozen him out of the trial preparations--preferring to risk dying in prison to revealing the truth of the crime to his son.

During forty years practicing medicine, Tom Cage made himself the most respected and beloved physician in Natchez, Mississippi. But this revered Southern figure has secrets known only to himself and a handful of others. Among them, Tom has a second son, the product of an 1960s affair with his devoted African American nurse, Viola Turner. It is Viola who has been murdered, and her bitter son--Penn's half-brother--who sets in motion the murder case against his father. The resulting investigation exhumes dangerous ghosts from Mississippi's violent past. In some way that Penn cannot fathom, Viola Turner was a nexus point between his father and the Double Eagles, a savage splinter cell of the KKK. More troubling still, the long-buried secrets shared by Dr. Cage and the former Klansmen may hold the key to the most devastating assassinations of the 1960s. The surviving Double Eagles will stop at nothing to keep their past crimes buried, and with the help of some of the most influential men in the state, they seek to ensure that Dr. Cage either takes the fall for them, or takes his secrets to an early grave.

Unable to trust anyone around him--not even his own mother--Penn joins forces with Serenity Butler, a famous young black author who has come to Natchez to write about his father's case. Two Decades Later, A Coterie Of Grad Students At Harvard Are Gradually Drawn Into The Inner Circle Of Renowned Psychologist And Psychedelic Drug Enthusiast Timothy Leary. Fitzhugh Loney, A Psychology Ph. D. Student And His Wife, Joanie, Become Entranced By The Drug's Possibilities Such That Their Research Becomes Less A Matter Of Clinical Trials And Academic Papers And Instead Turns Into A Free-wheeling Exploration Of Mind Expansion, Group Dynamics, And Communal Living. With His Trademark Humor And Pathos, Boyle Moves Us Through The Loneys' Initiation At One Of Leary's Parties To His Notorious Summer Seminars In Zihuatanejo Until The Loneys' Eventual Expulsion From Harvard And Their Introduction To A Communal Arrangement Of Thirty Devotees--students, Wives, And Children--living Together In A Sixty-four Room Mansion And Devoting Themselves To All Kinds Of Experimentation And Questioning. Is Lsd A Belief System? Does It Allow You To See God? Can The Loneys' Marriage--or Any Marriage, For That Matter--survive The Chaotic And Sometimes Orgiastic Use Of Psychedelic Drugs? Wry, Witty, And Wise, Outside Looking In Is An Ideal Subject For This American Master, And Highlights Boyle's Acrobatic Prose, Detailed Plots, And Big Ideas. It's An Utterly Engaging And Occasionally Trippy Look At The Nature Of Reality, Identity, And Consciousness, As Well As Our Seemingly Infinite Capacities For Creativity, Re-invention, And Self-discovery.-- T.
