It is best remembered as the origin of Shangri-La, a fictional utopian lamasery high in the mountains of Tibet. Hugh Conway, a veteran member of the British diplomatic service, finds inner peace, love, and a sense of purpose in Shangri-La, whose inhabitants enjoy unheard-of longevity. Among the book's themes is an allusion to the possibility of another cataclysmic world war brewing, as indeed it was at the time. It is said to have been inspired at least in part by accounts of travels in Tibetan borderlands, published in the National Geographic by the explorer and botanist Joseph Rock. The remote communities he visited, such as Muli, show many similarities to the fictional Shangri-La. One such town, Zhongdian, has now officially renamed itself as Shangri La (Chinese: Xianggelila) because of its claim to be the inspiration for the novel. The book explicitly notes that having made war on the ground man would now fill the skies with death, and that all precious things were in danger of being lost, like the lost histories of Rome ("Lost books of Livy"). It was hoped that overlooked by the violent, Shangri-la would preserve them and reveal them later to a receptive world exhausted by war. That was the real purpose of the Lamasary; study, inner peace and long life were a side benefit to living there. Conway is a veteran of the trench warfare of WWI, with the emotional state frequently cited after that war--a sense of emotional exhaustion or accelerated emotional aging. This harmonizes with the existing residents of the lamasary and he is strongly attracted to life at Shangri-La.

Categories:

Religion & Spirituality

Buddhism

Tibetan

From the author of the "full-throttle thriller" (A. She and her husband, Jeff, a CPA, have been happily married for twenty years. Her two teenage kids are terrific. And her catering business is a success. But then Jeff mysteriously disappears, and that picture-perfect life is shattered.

Publishers Weekly

Delinsky's mass market novels, national bestsellers for years, have been translated into 25 languages. A number are being reissued in 2001, with this 1991 novel to appear for the first time in hardcover. Highly competent, optimistic 38-year-old Laura Frye is secure in a long marriage, the mother of two bright, spirited kids and the owner of Cherries, a popular restaurant. As the novel begins, she is faced with any woman's worst nightmare her husband Jeffrey, a CPA, has mysteriously disappeared from the family's comfortable home in the elite college town of Northampton, Mass. Laura's anguish at his disappearance is exacerbated when Taylor "Tack" Jones, with the criminal investigation division of the IRS, informs her that Jeffrey is suspected of tax fraud. Jeff did spend liberally. Besides sustaining his family, he backed Laura when she opened Cherries and had recently bought himself a longed-for Porsche. But can he really be a criminal? The Fryes' best friend, classy lawyer Daphne Phillips, shares Laura's disbelief, but the family assets are frozen and Laura can't pay Cherries' bills or her own. Moreover, from the outset, the local media revels in the family's predicament. By the time Jeff's bachelor older brother and free spirit, Christian, turns up, Laura is distraught and the reader agonized: what more could possibly happen to a nice family? A lot, of course. Melodramatic incidents and coincidences abound, but the sociology-trained storyteller makes each of her characters captivating in this compelling tale. (Nov.)
