Evolving from a spirited student at West Point, Sherman became a general who fought in some of the Civil War’s most decisive campaigns―Shiloh, Vicksburg, Atlanta―until finally, seeking a swift ending to the war’s horrendous casualties, he devastated southern resources on his famous March to the Sea across the Carolinas. Later, as general-in-chief of the U.S. Army, Sherman relentlessly paved the way west during the Indian wars. James Lee McDonough’s fresh insight reveals a man tormented by fears that history would pass him by and that he would miss his chance to serve his country. Drawing on years of research, McDonough delves into Sherman’s dramatic personal life, including his strained relationship with his wife, his personal debts, and his young son’s death. Volume 2 is now out with 60 more stories, the same number of pages, but the stories are longer and more intense, and Volume 3 will be out this Fall. Every American should read them to learn what our Veterans went through over there. This is not just another war book. It is a book about people, and it contains the personal stories of 100 Veterans, men and women, who served there. Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines, from the late 1950s to 1975 we served from the Delta to the DMZ, and from Thailand to Yankee Station in the South China Sea. Infantry grunts, truck drivers, medics, helicopter pilots, nurses, clerk typists, jet pilots, mechanics, staff officers, repairmen, artillerymen, B-52 bombardiers, MPs, and doctors, we were black, white, and Hispanic, male and female. We were only in our teens and early twenties, but our stories continue to resonate through the years. January 30 marks the anniversary of the Tet Offensive, the seminal event of a war that dominated my generation and changed lives. Some of the men and women in this book are true war heroes. Most were just trying to survive. If you were there, you understand. If you weren’t, my hope is that through these stories you will. Breaking down the stereotypes, they tell who we were, the jobs we did, our memories of that time and place and how it changed us, and what we did after we came home. Over 58,200 of us paid the ultimate price, but the war didn’t end when the last US helicopter lifted off from the roof of the US Embassy in Saigon. It continues to take its ugly toll on many who did come home. Instead of bands and parades, we got PTSD and Agent Orange, diabetes, ischemic heart disease, neuropathy, leukemia, Hodgkin’s Disease, and prostate cancer, and many more. Featuring some of history’s most remarkable leaders, page-turning action, and vivid details, Countdown 1945 is a thrilling narrative of the covert meetings and pivotal developments that took place in the United States and around the world during the volatile spring and summer of 1945.
Countdown 1945 takes readers inside the minds of the iconic and elusive figures who join the quest for the bomb, each for different reasons: the legendary Albert Einstein, who eventually calls his vocal support for the atomic bomb “the one great mistake in my life”; lead researcher Robert “Oppie” Oppenheimer and the Soviet spies who secretly infiltrate his team; the fiercely competitive pilots of the plane selected to drop the bomb; and many more. Perhaps most of all, Countdown 1945 is the story of an untested new president confronting a decision that he knows will change the world forever. Truman’s journey during these 116 days is a story of high drama: from the shock of learning of the bomb’s existence, to the conflicting advice he receives from generals like Eisenhower and George Marshall, to wrestling with the devastating carnage that will result if he gives the order to use America’s first weapon of mass destruction.
But Countdown 1945 is more than a book about the atomic bomb. Five days later, only one of those Navy SEALS made it out alive.
This is the story of the only survivor of Operation Redwing, fire team leader Marcus Luttrell, and the extraordinary firefight that led to the largest loss of life in American Navy SEAL history. His teammates fought valiantly beside him until he was the only one left alive, blasted by an RPG into a place where his pursuers could not find him. Over the next four days, terribly injured and presumed dead, Luttrell crawled for miles through the mountains and was taken in by sympathetic villagers who risked their lives to keep him safe from surrounding Taliban warriors.
A born and raised Texan, Marcus Luttrell takes us from the rigors of SEAL training, where he and his fellow SEALs discovered what it took to join the most elite of the American special forces, to a fight in the desolate hills of Afghanistan for which they never could have been prepared. Based On Extensive Research In Both American And British Archives, 1776 Is The Story Of Americans In The Ranks, Men Of Every Shape, Size, And Color, Farmers, Schoolteachers, Shoemakers, No-accounts, And Mere Boys Turned Soldiers. And It Is The Story Of The King's Men, The British Commander, William Howe, And His Highly Disciplined Redcoats Who Looked On Their Rebel Foes With Contempt And Fought With A Valor Too Little Known. At The Center Of The Drama, With Washington, Are Two Young American Patriots, Who, At First, Knew No More Of War Than What They Had Read In Books - Nathanael Greene, A Quaker Who Was Made A General At Thirty-three, And Henry Knox, A Twenty-five-year-old Bookseller Who Had The Preposterous Idea Of Hauling The Guns Of Fort Ticonderoga Overland To Boston In The Dead Of Winter. The Book Begins In London On October 26, 1775, When His Majesty King George Iii Went Before Parliament To Declare America In Rebellion And To Affirm His Resolve To Crush It. From There The Story Moves To The Siege Of Boston And Its Astonishing Outcome, Then To New York, Where British Ships And British Troops Appear In Numbers Never Imagined And The Newly Proclaimed Continental Army Confronts The Enemy For The First Time. Lipsky followed one cadet class into mess halls, barracks, classrooms, bars, and training exercises, from arrival through graduation. By telling their stories, he also examines the Academy as a reflection of our society: Are its principles of equality, patriotism, and honor quaint anachronisms or is it still, as Theodore Roosevelt called it, the most "absolutely American" institution?
During arguably the most eventful four years in West Point's history, Lipsky witnesses the arrival of TVs and phones in dorm rooms, the end of hazing, and innumerable other shifts in policy and practice known collectively as The Changes. He uncovers previously unreported scandals and poignantly evokes the aftermath of September 11, when cadets must prepare to become officers in wartime.
Absolutely American spotlights a remarkable ensemble of characters: a former Eagle Scout who struggles with every facet of the program, from classwork to marching; a foul-mouthed party animal who hates the military and came to West Point to play football; a farm-raised kid who seems to be the perfect soldier, despite his affection for the early work of Georgia O’Keeffe; and an exquisitely turned-out female cadet who aspires to "a career in hair and nails" after the Army. These cadets and their classmates are transformed in fascinating, sometimes astonishing, ways by one of America's most mythologized and least understood challenges. Many of them thrive under the rigorous regimen; others battle endlessly just to survive it. A few give up the fight altogether.
Lipsky's extensive experience covering college students for Rolling Stone helped him gain an exceptional degree of trust and candor from both cadets and administrators. For The Better Part Of A Century, The Story Of Uss Indianapolis Has Been Understood As A Sinking Tale. The Reality, However, Is Far More Complicated--and Compelling. Now, For The First Time, Thanks To A Decade Of Original Research And Interviews With 107 Survivors And Eyewitnesses, Lynn Vincent And Sara Vladic Tell The Complete Story Of The Ship, Her Crew, And Their Final Mission To Save One Of Their Own. It Begins In 1932, When Indianapolis Is Christened And Launched As The Ship Of State For President Franklin Roosevelt. After Pearl Harbor, Indianapolis Leads The Charge To The Pacific Islands, Notching An Unbroken String Of Victories In An Uncharted Theater Of War. Then, Under Orders From President Harry Truman, The Ship Takes Aboard A Superspy And Embarks On Her Final World-changing Mission: Delivering The Core Of The Atomic Bomb To The Pacific For The Strike On Hiroshima. Vincent And Vladic Provide A Visceral, Moment-by-moment Account Of The Disaster That Unfolds Days Later After The Japanese Torpedo Attack, From The Chaos On Board The Sinking Ship To The First Moments Of Shock As The Crew Plunge Into The Remote Waters Of The Philippine Sea, To The Long Days And Nights During Which Terror And Hunger Morph Into Delusion And Desperation, And The Men Must Band Together To Survive. Then, For The First Time, The Authors Go Beyond The Men's Rescue To Chronicle Indianapolis's Extraordinary Final Mission: The Survivors' Fifty-year Fight For Justice On Behalf Of Their Skipper, Captain Charles Mcvay Iii, Who Is Wrongly Court-martialed For The Sinking. What Follows Is A Captivating Courtroom Drama That Weaves Through Generations Of American Presidents, From Harry Truman To George W. More than four years of mindless slaughter in the trenches on the western front, World War I was the first fought in three dimensions: in the air, at sea, and through mechanized ground warfare. New weapons systems—tanks, bomber aircraft, and long-range artillery—all shaped the battle environment. Moving beyond the standard portrayal of the war's generals as "butchers and bunglers," Neiberg offers a nuanced discussion of officers constrained by the monumental scale of complex events. Diaries and letters of men serving on the front lines capture the personal stories and brutal conditions—from Alpine snows to Mesopotamian sands—under which these soldiers lived, fought, and died.

Generously illustrated, with many never-before-published photographs, this book is an impressive blend of analysis and narrative. And Neiberg also goes considerably further afield than do many one-volume accounts. A larger-than-usual share of responsibility is laid on the Germans, particularly for their diplomacy before the war and in its opening stages. Neiberg's analyses of military incompetence do not bog down (along with the armies) on the Western Front-the Italian campaign is noted, where the Italian army distinguished itself in spite of being nearly extinguished. Even in the battle narratives, one finds choice revelations, such as how the French African troops' khaki uniforms (which were designed for warfare in dusty Africa) helped the French to abandon their conspicuous prewar garb. The illustrations (89 duotones and 10 maps) are particularly well chosen. Compare this book with Hew Strachan's The First World War; it ranks above entries by Martin Gilbert and John Keegan in readability and value for a wider audience. (Apr.) But a small handful of Navy leaders, submariners and intelligence officials from that era have long known otherwise: that the loss of the USS Scorpion (SSN 589) and its crew of 99 men on May 22, 1968, was an act of war. The Scorpion was sunk by a Soviet sub in an act of reprisal for the sinking of the Soviet missile sub K-129, which had gone down in the Pacific just ten weeks before. The Scorpion sinking is not a mystery; it is a Cold War secret that has been buried by both the U.S. and Soviet governments since 1968. At the time, both sides quickly realized that the back-to-back submarine sinkings - if publicly known - could have turned the Cold War into a hot war overnight. For nearly 40 years, the Navy and U.S. intelligence communities have continued to cover up the facts of the Scorpion sinking, citing the need to protect top secret military classification. The full account of its loss has continued to elude and frustrate researchers, journalists and family members of the lost crew - until now. After a quarter century of research, this book is the first to tell the story of what actually happened to the ninety-nine members of the U.S. Navy's elite Submarine Service who disappeared in the service of their country to a watery grave on the ocean floor 11,100 feet down. It reveals that the Navy's official Scorpion story - from the sub's failure to make port to a frantic open-ocean hunt, to a scientific search that ultimately "found" the wreckage, to a Court of Inquiry's carefully-crafted conclusions - was all a lie.

Categories:

Engineering & Transportation

Transportation

Ships

History

In his own book, Wartime, Paul Fussell called With the Old Breed "one of the finest memoirs to emerge from any war." John Keegan referred to it in The Second World War as "one of the most arresting documents in war literature." And Studs Terkel was so fascinated with the story he interviewed its author for his book, "The Good War." What has made E.B. The reality of battle meant unbearable heat, deafening gunfire, unimaginable brutality and cruelty, the stench of death, and, above all, constant fear. At the same time, this outstanding narrative lays bare the titanic ego and ambition of the Pacific War’s most prominent general, Douglas MacArthur, and the complex challenges he faced in Japan’s unconditional surrender and America’s lengthy occupation.

Categories:

Biographies & Memoirs

Leaders & Notable People

Military

World War II

Major General Julian Thompson first wrote No Picnic when the momentous events of April – June 1982 were fresh in his mind. And after climbing through a landscape of hell itself, they raised a flag.

Now the son of one of the flagraisers has written a powerful account of six very different young men who came together in a moment that will live forever.

To his family, John Bradley never spoke of the photograph or the war.
